Modern fuses are called Bickford fuses after the British inventor William Bickford (1794-1834), and are also called safety fuses because of their performance. They have been used in conjunction with dynamite and industrial detonators as an important accessory for blasting, but in recent years, industrial detonators have been replaced by electric detonators in developed countries, and so they have become less used.
