1830‐62 Yugoslav poet. Born in Macedonia. After studying philosophy in Athens, he worked with his brother Dimitar M. (1810-62) on the nationalist movement and collected folk songs. While studying in Moscow (1856-60), he wrote "Longing for the South," reminiscing about his hometown on the shores of Lake Ohrid. He traveled to Istanbul to rescue his brother from imprisonment, but was captured and massacred himself. Although he produced only a small number of works, he is revered as the father of modern Macedonian poetry. [Tanaka Issei] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
