As shown in the figure, a thin layer has equal amounts of positive and negative magnetic fields distributed continuously on both sides. It is also called a magnetic shell or magnetic plate. The magnetic moment per unit area τ is called the strength of the magnetic double layer, and the magnetic field created by the magnetic double layer is equal to the magnetic field created by a current of strength τ/μ ₀ (μ ₀ is the permeability of a vacuum) flowing around the surface.
