The causes include the following: (1) Absence of the thyroid gland due to abnormalities in the development of the thyroid gland during fetal development (athyroid cretinism), incomplete thyroid formation (hypoplasia), or abnormal location (ectopic thyroid gland). During fetal development, the thyroid gland primordium originates from an epithelial depression on the ventral midline of the pharynx, and is located at the base of the tongue, but gradually descends to its normal position in the neck.
