...American diplomat and Central Asian explorer. In the spring of 1873, Schuyler, who was the American consul general in St. Petersburg, traveled to West Turkistan with the journalist Januarius Aloysius MacGahan (1844-78). After parting ways with MacGahan, who was going to Khiva, Schuyler inspected Samarkand, Tashkent, Kokand, and other places, before returning home via Issyk-Kul and Kurja. He later served as consul general in Turkey, and in 1890 was appointed consul general in Egypt, where he died suddenly shortly after. *Some of the terminology references "MacGahan, JA" are listed below.
