In the spring of 1873, Schuyler, who was the American consul general in St. Petersburg, traveled to West Turkistan with the journalist Januarius Aloysius MacGahan (1844-78). After parting ways with MacGahan, who was going to Khiva, Schuyler inspected Samarkand, Tashkent, Kokand, and other places, before returning home via Issyk-Kul and Kurja. He later served as consul general in Turkey, and in 1890 was appointed consul general in Egypt, where he died suddenly shortly after. *Some of the terminology references "MacGahan, JA" are listed below.
