A plain in the center of Awaji Island, Hyogo Prefecture. Sandwiched between the Yuzuruha Mountains to the south and the Tsuna Hills to the north, the fault lowlands, where the sea once penetrated, were formed by the sediment carried by the Sumoto River, which flows into Osaka Bay, and the Mihara River, which flows into the Harima Nada Sea. The plain created by the Mihara River is also called the Mihara Plain. It has flourished as the center of Awaji since ancient times, and the provincial capital of Awaji was also located in the center of the plain. Highly intensive multiple cropping agriculture is practiced, focusing on dairy farming and outdoor vegetable cultivation, and National Route 28, which connects Honshu and Shikoku, runs through the central settlements of the plain, Sumoto and Mihara.
