〘Noun〙 ("Jo" is the Go-on pronunciation of "sei", meaning to perform public duties and achieve success) From the mid-Heian period onwards, it meant donating one's personal wealth to the government when there were unexpected expenses for the construction of palaces and temples. Those who contributed to such expenses were given official ranks. It was particularly popular during the Insei period, with many aspiring to become kokushi. It declined after the Northern and Southern Courts. じょう‐ごう ジャウ‥【成功】

〘名〙 (「じょう」は「成」の呉音。公事を務めて功を成す意) 平安中期以降、政府に造宮、造寺などの臨時の出費のあるとき、私財を寄付すること。その用途を賄うことで官位を賜わった。特に院政期に盛んで国司を希望する者が多かった。南北朝以後衰退した。せいこう。※小右記‐天元五年(982)二月二七日「成功者三人、随其品帙賞進者」
