[Noun] An oval copper coin issued from 1835 ( Tenpo 6 ) in the Edo period. With the characters "Tohyaku" on the back, it was circulated as the first 100-mon currency in Japan, but because its actual value was too low compared to the 1-mon and 4-mon coins, its value in the market gradually dropped. It weighed 5 momme 5 bu (20.6 grams). It was used in parallel with the new style currency even after the promulgation of the New Currency Ordinance in 1871 ( Meiji 4 ), but in December of that year the circulation of the new "8 rin" coin was regulated, and in 1891 its circulation was banned.
