A former town in Tamura County in central-eastern Fukushima Prefecture. Almost the entire area is part of the Abukuma Highlands and forms a plateau, with a wide limestone area and prominent karst cave topography. The town's center is Kanmata along the Ban'etsu East Line. The town produces rice and tobacco leaves, and also raises livestock. There are factories for stone powder and lens polishing. Mount Otakine is located at the northeastern end. In March 2005, the town merged with Ogoe Town, Tokoha Town, Funehiki Town, and Miyakoji Village in Tamura County to become a city, Tamura City. 50.70 km2 . 5,503 people (2003). 福島県中東部,田村郡の旧町。ほぼ全域阿武隈(あぶくま)高地に含まれ高原状を呈し,石灰岩地域が広く,鍾乳(しょうにゅう)洞カルスト地形が顕著。中心は磐越東(ばんえつとう)線に沿う神俣(かんまた)。米,葉タバコを産し,畜産も行う。石粉工業,レンズ研磨などの工場がある。北東端に大滝根(おおたきね)山がある。2005年3月田村郡大越町,常葉町,船引町,都路村と合併し市制,田村市となる。50.70km2。5503人(2003)。
