In ancient China, those who formed gangs among the wandering classes, who bore swords, maintained integrity in their private relationships, and always took revenge on those who dishonored their relatives and friends, were called chivalrous men, wandering chivalrous men, or chivalrous men, and their spirit was called chivalrous men. Chivalrous men mean to be sincere in their interactions, to rescue people from difficult situations regardless of their own interests or life or death, and to hide people responsibly even if it means breaking the state ban. The spirit of chivalry was strong in Mozi's scholars, and many chivalrous men were among the guests gathered by the four princes of the Warring States period, including Mengchangjun. The power of Liu Bang, the first emperor of the Han dynasty, also grew based on wandering chivalrous groups.

　古代中国では，遊民層のあいだで剣を帯びて徒党を結び，私交に信義をつらぬき，親族知友を辱しめるものには必ず仇を報ずる人々を俠，遊俠，俠客といい，その気風を任俠という。任とは交わりに誠実で，利害生死を顧みずに人の窮境を救い，国禁を犯しても責任をもって人をかくまう意。墨子の学団に任俠の風が強く，孟嘗君（もうしようくん）などの戦国四公子が集めた食客にも多くの俠がおり，漢の高祖劉邦の勢力も遊俠集団を基礎にして成長した。
