Takamine Chikufu - Takamine Chikufu

A performer of the Chikuzen Biwa. Born in Hakata. His real name was Suzuki Tetsuro. He studied biwa under Yoshida Takeko in his youth. After graduating from Fukuoka Prefectural Technical School, he joined the infantry during the Russo-Japanese War and even played biwa in the battlefield. He traveled around the country teaching many disciples, and was active in Tokyo in his later years. In 1912 (Taisho 1), he established a new school called "Takamine Biwa," which became very popular, but after Chikufu died suddenly at the age of 57 from a cerebral hemorrhage, he had no successor and his style declined. His works include "Shonanko" and "Nichiren Shonin," which are considered masterpieces. The actress Takamine Mieko (1918-90) is his eldest daughter.

筑前琵琶(ちくぜんびわ)の演奏家。博多(はかた)生まれ。本名鈴木徹郎。琵琶は青年時代に吉田竹子に学んだ。福岡県立工業学校卒業後、日露戦争では歩兵となり、陣中で琵琶を奏したこともある。全国を巡って多くの門弟を教え、晩年は東京で活躍した。1912年（大正1）「高峰琵琶」という新派を開き、大いに流行したが、筑風が脳出血のため57歳で急逝すると、後継者がなく衰えた。作品に『小楠公(しょうなんこう)』『日蓮上人(にちれんしょうにん)』があり、名曲とされる。女優高峰三枝子(みえこ)（1918―90）はその長女である。
