A former Aizu samurai, he studied at the Nisshinkan school, and in April 1868, he became a personal attendant to the feudal lord Matsudaira Katamori, and in September, the Aizu Campaign began. He was placed under house arrest and moved to Tokyo, where he studied English and other subjects at the private schools of Fukuchi Gen'ichiro, Numa Morikazu, and Mitsukuri Akitsubo. In July 1861, he transferred to Keio Gijuku to study English, a course he held for five years. During this time, he was in charge of English classes in 1872. In July 1873, the Ministry of Education decided to send three students to the United States to study in order to investigate the teacher education department, and Takamine Hideo, Izawa Shuji (principal of Aichi Normal School), and Kozu Senzaburo (a student at Dojinsha) were selected. Takamine entered Oswego Normal School, New York State, in September 1875, graduating in July 1877. During this time he studied the Pestalozzi teaching method under Principal Sheldon and Vice-Principal Kluge, while also deepening his ties with Johonot. He also studied biology under Cornell University's Professor Wilder (a student of Agassiz). In April 1878 he returned to Japan and was appointed to Tokyo Normal School (University of Tsukuba), where he energetically worked to establish the Oswego system, creating a model of normal education. He later served as professor and principal of the Women's Higher Normal School (Ochanomizu University). <References> "The Biography of Professor Takamine Hideo," Nakagawa Takashi, "The Process of Forming Developmental Teaching Theory at Tokyo Normal School" ("Japanese Educational History," Vol. 18) (Takashi Nakagawa) Source: Asahi Japanese Historical Biography: Asahi Shimbun Publications Inc.
