Ponti, C. (English spelling) PontiC

After graduating from Rome's Centro Sperimentale di Cinematographia (Experimental Film Center) and serving in the military during World War II, he produced Giuseppe De Santis's Bitter Rice (1948), which mixed neorealism with eroticism, and became an international hit, promoting the heroine, the voluptuous actress Silvana Mangano (who he married in 1949). In 1950, he founded a production company with filmmaker Carlo Ponti, and produced such films as Roberto Rossellini's Europa 1951 (1952), Federico Fellini's Strada (1954) and Nights of Cabiria (1956), and King Vidor's American-Italian coproduction War and Peace (1956). In 1957, he dissolved his production company with Ponti and, with the aim of modernizing Italian film, built the largest and most modern film studio, Dinocittà, near Rome. He produced such films as The Creation (1966) directed by John Huston, The Stranger (1967) directed by Luchino Visconti, and the Italian-Soviet coproduction Waterloo (1970) directed by Sergei Bondarchuk, and became known as the "King of Italian Film."
