An island in the southern Baltic Sea, between the Bay of Kiel and the Bay of Lübeck. Its area is 185 km2 and its population is about 6,500. It belongs to the German state of Schleswig-Holstein. It is separated from the mainland by the Fehmarn Strait, which is just over 1 km wide, and faces the Danish island of Lolland across the Fehmarnbelt, which is 19 km wide. The island is a low, undulating area caused by glacial erosion, with a maximum height of 27 m. Agriculture and livestock farming are thriving on the island, and its main city is Burg. An iron bridge was completed in 1963, connecting it to the mainland. [Takeda Mutsumi] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
