A French Renaissance potter from around 1510 to 1590. After traveling around the country training as an apprentice in glass engraving, he opened a workshop in Saintes in southwestern France in 1539, and in 1548 perfected his unique style of pottery. His style, known as "rustic wares," involved making molds from actual reptiles, fish, and crustaceans, as well as leaves, weeds, and seaweed, and he succeeded in reproducing the subtle shades of blue, green, yellow, purple, and white. His talent was recognized by Regent Catherine de Medici and others, and he was invited to Paris in 1566, where he set up a workshop in the Tuileries Palace and completed many masterpieces.
