A religious leader in the Maratha region (Maharashtra) of western India. Great-grandson of Bhanudas, a prominent Bhagavata sect member. Born in Paithan, he was active in holy places such as Pandharpur from the age of 12. He received a formal Sanskrit education, but was devoted to the 13th century religious leader Jnaneshwar, who wrote a commentary on the Bhagavad Gita in Marathi, called Jnaneshwari, and compiled the book. He is said to have produced a vast amount of poetry as a religious poet who sang of fervent monotheistic bhakti (devotion). The only surviving works are a commentary on the 11th chapter of the sacred text, the Bhagavata Purana, and the Bhabārtha Ramayana, which sings of the spirit of the Ramayana.

インド西部，マラーター地方(マハーラーシュトラ)の宗教家。バーガバタ派の著名なバーヌダースの曾孫。パイタンの生れであるが，12歳以来，パンダルプルなどの聖地を中心に活動した。正規のサンスクリットの教育を受けたが，俗語マラーティーで《バガバッドギーター》の注釈書《ジュニャーネーシュワリー》を著した13世紀の宗教家ジュニャーネーシュワルに傾倒，同書の編纂に当たった。彼は，熱烈な一神教的なバクティ(信愛)の念を歌い上げる宗教詩人として膨大な詩を作ったといわれるが，現存するものとしては，聖典《バーガバタ･プラーナ》の第11章への注釈書，《ラーマーヤナ》の精神を歌った《バーバールタ･ラーマーヤナ》がある。
