1533‐99? A religious leader in the Maratha region (Maharashtra) of western India. Great-grandson of Bhanudas, a prominent Bhagavata sect member. Born in Paithan, he was active in holy places such as Pandharpur from the age of 12. He received a formal Sanskrit education, but was devoted to the 13th century religious leader Jnaneshwar, who wrote a commentary on the Bhagavad Gita in Marathi, called Jnaneshwari, and compiled the book. He is said to have produced a vast amount of poetry as a religious poet who sang of fervent monotheistic bhakti (devotion). The only surviving works are a commentary on the 11th chapter of the sacred text, the Bhagavata Purana, and the Bhabārtha Ramayana, which sings of the spirit of the Ramayana. 1533‐99?
