Takanosu Basin - Takanosu basin

Takanosu Basin - Takanosu basin

A fault basin located in the middle reaches of the Yoneshiro River in northern Akita Prefecture. It covers an area of approximately 230 square kilometers. It is surrounded by the mountains of the Dewa Mountains, and the Ani River flows along the western edge of the basin. The floor of the basin is approximately 30 meters above sea level in the east and 19 meters above sea level in the west. The areas along the Yoneshiro River and the Ani River consist of alluvial lowlands and river terraces. Most of the river terrace surfaces are covered by pumiceous volcanic ash layers, which are the product of the Towada Volcano. In the southern part of the basin is a diluvial plateau called Onodai. Due to a lack of irrigation water and acidic soil, the area was grassland and forest land for many years, but since 1937 (Showa 12), prefecture-run reclamation has been carried out and settlements have developed, and after World War II, settlement villages were built. The Prefectural Onodai Agricultural College (which became the Prefectural Agricultural College in 1978, but was abolished in 1997) was also established, and efforts were made to foster mid-level farmers. The center of the basin is around Takanosu in Kitaakita City.
