Born in Tempō 4. He studied under Utagawa Kuniyoshi and was highly acclaimed alongside his fellow student Tsukioka Yoshitoshi. He participated in the launch of the Tokyo Nichi Nichi Shimbun in 1872 and the Tokyo Eiri Shimbun in 1875, incorporating illustrations into the newspapers. He excelled in paintings of beautiful women and actors. He passed away on February 6, 1904. He was 72 years old. He was from Edo. He was commonly known as Ikujiro.
