Macrocheira kaempferi (Japanese spider crab)

Japanese: タカアシガニ(高脚蟹) - タカアシガニ（英語表記）Macrocheira kaempferi

This is the world's largest crab, belonging to the family Araneidae of Crustacea, and there is only one species in one genus (illustration). It is a pear-shaped crab with a carapace length of 35 cm and a carapace width of about 30 cm. In fully grown males, the claws become much longer than the walking legs, and when spread out, they can reach more than 3 m. The carapace is covered with large and small sharp wart-like protrusions, and in addition, numerous small cirriped veils are attached. The spine on the forehead is about 1/8 of the carapace length and is strongly curved outward. In young individuals, the carapace is densely covered with short hairs, and the spine on the forehead does not open much, reaching nearly 1/2 the carapace length.

甲殻綱クモガニ科に属する世界最大のカニで，1属1種（イラスト）。甲長35cm，甲幅30cmほどのヨウナシ型。十分に成長した雄でははさみ脚が歩脚よりもはるかに長くなり，左右に広げると3m以上になる。甲面は大小のとがったいぼ状突起で覆われ，さらに蔓脚（まんきやく）類のヒメエボシが多数付着している。額のとげは甲長の1/8ほどで，外側に強く曲がっている。幼個体では甲面に短毛が密にはえ，額のとげはあまり開かず，甲長の1/2に近い。
