A large, beautiful moss of the family Ganodermaceae. Also called Kouyanomannengoke. It is distributed throughout East Asia, and in Japan, it grows on the forest floor in various places, forming sparse colonies. The stem crawls long through the humus, and the tip of the stem rises sharply, growing to become an above-ground stem 5-10 cm tall. The upper part of the above-ground stem curves, and produces many supple, bending branches. The leaves at the lower part of the stem are small and scale-like, while the upper leaves are broadly ovate to lanceolate. This species remains forever after it dies, and if it is immersed in water again, the branches will spread out and it will return to its original beautiful shape, so it has been given the Japanese name Mannen-sou (manen-sou), and this property is used as a material for underwater flowers.
