Born: September 23, 1849 in Biala, Silesia
Died December 2, 1924. German astronomer in Munich. Son of the mayor of Biala. Studied astronomy in Heidelberg and Leipzig, receiving his doctorate in 1871. After working as an assistant at the Leipzig Observatory and a member of the Bonn Observatory, he became director of the Gotha Observatory (1881) and professor and observatory director at the University of Munich (1982). He was president of the Astronomical Society (1996-1921) and president of the Munich Academy of Sciences (18-23). In 1974, he led an expedition to the Pacific Ocean to observe the meridian passage of Venus. He made outstanding achievements in theoretical research into stellar statistics, and is particularly known for his integral equation relating the distribution density function of stars to apparent luminosity. He was also an excellent mentor, nurturing many capable successors.
