It was on the feast day of John the Baptist (June 24th) in 1717 that four lodges (originally meaning "workhouses" for craftsmen at large construction sites) in London and Westminster were united under the leadership of Anthony Sayer into one great lodge as the "center of unity and harmony". Six years later, in 1723, Protestant pastor James Anderson compiled the "Constitution" and established the "Ancient Obligations", the moral code that Freemasons should observe.
