Crystallographic field

...This is a modification of the crystal field theory, which considers this interaction to be a pure electrostatic bond, to take covalent bonds into account, but sometimes the two are treated as the same without making a distinction. In other words, the central metal ion is considered to be a cation, and all the ligands surrounding it are approximated as negative point charges (even neutral ligands are considered to have the negative end of the dipole pointing toward the central metal ion), and the crystal field theory considers what the energy levels of the electrons of the central metal ion will be when placed in a static electric field (called a crystalline field) caused by that charge, ignoring the effect of the metal ion on the electron orbitals of the ligands. In other words, the coordinate bond is treated as an electrostatic bond.
