Japanese: ダーウィンハナガエル（英語表記）Darwin’s dwarf frog

This frog of the family Ranaidae has an unusual reproductive habit in which the male raises the young. It was discovered by C. Darwin during the voyage of the Beagle (illustration). Its local name is Vaquero. It is found in Chile and southern Argentina and is small, about 3 cm long. Its body is shaped like a dead leaf, with a long, thin snout that forms a small protrusion. It lives in broadleaf forests and its body color varies widely from yellowish brown to greenish brown. Its diet is not well known. During the breeding season, several males gather around the female and watch over the 20 to 30 eggs that have been laid for about 10 to 20 days.

雄が幼生を育児する変わった繁殖習性をもつハナガエル科のカエルで，ビーグル号航海中のC.ダーウィンによって発見された（イラスト）。現地名はバケロ。チリ，アルゼンチン南部に分布し，体長3cmほどの小型。体は枯葉形で，吻（ふん）部が細長くのびて小突起となっている。広葉樹林にすみ，体色は黄褐色から緑褐色まで変異が多い。食性はよくわかっていない。繁殖期には雌のまわりに数匹の雄が集まり，産卵された20～30個の卵のそばで，10～20日間ほど見守る。
