A Confucian scholar and seal engraver in the mid-Edo period. He was born on March 15, 7th year of the Kyoho era in Takanashi, Kai (Yamanashi Prefecture) as the son of a doctor. It is said that his family name Takashi comes from the place name, and his title Fuyou comes from Mount Fuji (Fuyou Peak), which he was familiar with as a child, but this is based on an inscription on his grave dated 6th year of the Tenmei era (1786), and the place name Takanashi does not exist in the past or present. His given name was Mouhyu, and his pen name was Juhi. He was also known by other names such as Chugaku Gasshi and Mitaka Dosha. His real surname was Minamoto and Oshima. He was commonly known as Ikki, but he often changed his surname. At the age of 20, he went to Kyoto to study Confucianism, and became acquainted with literati and artists such as Ikeno Taiga. In addition to showing great talent in poetry, calligraphy and painting, he was well versed in the art of court etiquette, had a deep knowledge of prose and phonetics, and was particularly skilled in seal carving. He rejected the vulgar Ming and Qing style that was popular at the time, and instead modeled his work after ancient seals from the distant Qin and Han dynasties, creating a refined style that earned him the nickname "Saint Seal." In March of the fourth year of Tenmei, he traveled to Edo to join the government, but died shortly after his arrival on April 24th (or 26th) at the age of 63.
