Yankee Doodle

Japanese: ヤンキー･ドゥードル（英語表記）Yankee Doodle

A beloved American song. It is also familiar in Japan as the melody of the song "On the Mountain of the Alps, 10,000 Feet Above the Mountain." Yankee refers to Americans during the British colonial period, but the meaning of Doodle is unknown. Its origin is unclear, but the melody was known in medieval Europe and was introduced to America via Britain. The lyrics have varied over the years, but the version written by British military surgeon Richard Schuckburgh, who established the current title, in 1775 during the French and Indian War, mocks poorly trained colonial soldiers.

アメリカの国民的愛唱歌。日本でも〈アルプス1万尺お山の上で〉という歌のメロディとして親しまれている。ヤンキーとはイギリス植民地時代のアメリカ人を指すが，ドゥードルの意味は未詳。起源は明らかではないが，メロディは中世ヨーロッパで知られており，イギリス経由でアメリカに伝わった。歌詞は時代によってさまざまであるが，現在の表題を定着させたイギリス人軍医シュックバーグRichard Schuckburghがフレンチ･インディアン戦争時の1775年に作ったものは，訓練の行き届かない植民地兵士をからかっている。
