Mount Ofuna

A volcano in the Kuju district of Taketa City, western Oita Prefecture. It is 1,786 meters above sea level. It is a stratovolcano of pyroxene andesite lava developed on a massive volcanic body of amphibole andesite, with a small crater lake called Oike on the east side of the summit and a double crater of Yonekubo and Danbaru on the north side of the summit. A large colony of Miyamakirishi flowers (nationally designated natural monuments) can be found around the summit, which is a beautiful sight during the flowering season from late May to June. It is part of Aso Kuju National Park. It is a 4.5 hour walk from Senninzuka in the Kuju district and a little over 3 hours from Chojabaru in Kokonoe town.

大分県西部、竹田市(たけたし)久住(くじゅう)地区にある火山。標高1786メートル。角閃(かくせん)石安山岩の塊状火山体の上に輝石安山岩溶岩の成層火山が発達したもので、山頂東面に御池(おいけ)の小火口湖、山頂北側に米窪(よねくぼ)・段原(だんばる)の二重火口がある。これら山頂一帯にミヤマキリシマの大群落（国指定天然記念物）があり、5月下旬から6月の開花期に美観を呈する。阿蘇くじゅう国立公園(あそくじゅうこくりつこうえん)の一部をなす。久住地区千人塚(せんにんづか)から徒歩4時間半、九重(ここのえ)町長者原(ちょうじゃばる)から3時間余。
