Formosan squirrel - gray-bellied free squirrel

A mammalian animal of the order Rodentia and family Sciuridae. It is a subspecies of the grey-headed squirrel and is found in Taiwan, Myanmar (Burma), Thailand, and the Malay Peninsula. Its body length is 18-24 cm, and its tail length 17-21 cm. Compared to the Japanese squirrel (Sciurus japonica), it has shorter limbs and shorter, rounder ears. Its body color is gray or light greenish brown on the back, sometimes reddish, and gray-brown on the ventral side. It inhabits forests, secondary forests, cultivated land, parks, etc., and makes nests of twigs and leaves on the branches of low trees. It mainly lives in trees, but is not as adept at climbing as the Japanese squirrel, and often descends to the ground to forage. It is active in the early morning and evening, and eats fruits, seeds, buds, insects, etc. It gives birth to 1-5 young. In Japan, captive individuals escaped from a zoo on Izu Oshima and have become wild, causing damage to camellia fruits and other crops, which has become a problem. Other known wild habitats include Enoshima in Kanagawa Prefecture and Komazawa Park in Tokyo.

哺乳(ほにゅう)綱齧歯(げっし)目リス科の動物。ハイガシラリスの亜種で台湾、ミャンマー（ビルマ）、タイ、マレー半島に分布する。体長18～24センチメートル、尾長17～21センチメートル。ニホンリス（ホンドリス）に比べ、四肢が短く、耳介が短く丸い。体色は背側が灰色または淡緑褐色で、ときに赤みを帯び、腹側は灰褐色をしている。森林、二次林、耕作地、公園などに生息し、低木の枝上に小枝と葉で巣をつくってすむ。おもに樹上で行動するが、木登りはニホンリスほど巧みではなく、しばしば地上に降りて採餌(さいじ)する。早朝と夕刻に活動し、果実、種子、芽、昆虫などを食べる。1産1～5子。日本では、伊豆大島で動物園から逃亡した飼育個体が野生化して増え、ツバキの実などを食害するので問題になっている。そのほか、神奈川県の江の島、東京都の駒沢(こまざわ)公園などいくつかの野生地が知られる。
