An area in the southwest of the Republic of Ireland. It includes seven counties: Clare, Limerick, Tipperary (two counties, South and North), Kerry, Cork, and Waterford. It has an area of 24,127 square kilometers and a population of 1,101,266 (2002 census preliminary figure). It is one of the old kingdoms of Ireland. It was invaded by Vikings in the 10th century and Anglo-Normans in the 12th century. Around 1586, the British started a colonial policy under Water Lawley and Edmund Spencer, and it was under British rule until the independence of the Republic. It is dominated by mixed agricultural areas of arable farming, dairy farming, and livestock farming, but modern industrial clusters can be seen in the coastal cities facing St. George's Channel. Cork, Waterford, and Limerick are the main cities. [Iwao Yoneda] Source: Shogakukan Encyclopedia Nipponica About Encyclopedia Nipponica Information | Legend |
