Elijah; Eliyyah

Elijah; Eliyyah
A Hebrew prophet in the mid-9th century BCE. During the Old Testament, he re-established the faith of Yahweh, which was in danger of being corrupted, while fighting against the infringement of the Phoenician natural religion of Baal. Elijah means "Yahweh is my God." His decisive actions were praised on a par with those of Moses, and in later generations he was said to be a savior in times of crisis and a forerunner of the Messiah. He confronted 450 prophets of Baal on Mount Carmel and won the victory of Yahweh's monotheism (1 Kings 18:20-40). He was taken up to heaven by a whirlwind, and according to Old Testament prophecy (Malachi 4:5), he will return as a forerunner of the great and terrible day of the Lord. The work of a severe and isolated man who only hears the faint voice of God will be accomplished by waiting for Elisha. The feast day of Elijah is celebrated on July 20 in both the Eastern and Western churches. Elijah's name is also recorded in the Quran.
