Jay, John
Born: December 12, 1745 in New York
[Died] May 17, 1829. Bedford, New York. American politician, diplomat, and judge. First Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court. Also spelled Jay. On the eve of American independence, he opposed the radical separatists and sought the possibility of compromise with Great Britain. He attended the first Continental Congress in 1774 and the second in 1775, and was elected Speaker in 1778. During the Revolutionary War, he was entrusted with negotiating with Spain. From May 1782, he negotiated with the French government together with B. Franklin to negotiate peace with Great Britain, signed a preliminary agreement with Great Britain in November of the same year, and prepared the draft of the Treaty of Paris on September 3, 1883. From 1884, he was appointed by the Continental Congress to be the head of foreign affairs. He wrote some articles in The Federalist to promote the ratification of the Federal Constitution. He served as Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court from 1789 to 1795, and handled the case of Chisholm v. Georgia, restricting state rights. In September 1894, he signed the Treaty of 1801 as a special envoy for President G. Washington to avoid war with Britain. From 1895 to 1801, he was Governor of New York State.

[Died] March 6, 1996. Oxfordshire. British politician and journalist. After graduating from Oxford University, he worked at The Times from 1929 to 1933, The Economist from 1933 to 1937, and was editor of the Daily Herald from 1937 to 1941. He worked for the Ministry of Supply and other agencies during World War II. He was elected as a Labour member of the House of Commons in 1946. He served as Under Secretary of State for Economic Affairs to the Treasury from 1947 to 1950, and as Under Secretary to the Exchequer from 1950 to 1951, and as Minister of Commerce from 1964 to 1967. His main work was "After the Common Market" (1968).
