Daylam (English spelling)

Daylam (English spelling)
An ancient name for the mountainous region on the southwestern shore of the Caspian Sea. The region of Tabarestan in the east and Gilan in the west were also sometimes called Dairam in a broad sense, but more accurately, Dairam refers to the region between these two. Due to its rugged terrain, it did not become Islamized even during the Arab conquest, and it is said to have been a closed, patriarchal society ruled by a group called kadukhodā. The language spoken was a branch of Persian, and women also worked in agriculture and shepherding. From the second half of the 9th century, the Zaydi missionary work led to an increase in the number of people converting to Shiite Islam, and there was active expansion into the Islamic world.
