A former town in Higashiiwai County in southern Iwate Prefecture. Most of the area is hilly, and the Satetsu River, a tributary of the Kitakami River, flows through the town, through which the Ofunato Line passes. Geologically, the soil is mostly limestone, and limestone mining and the cement industry are thriving. Handmade Japanese paper called Tozan washi is a specialty of the town, and it is home to Geibikei Gorge. In September 2005, it was incorporated into Ichinoseki City along with Hanaizumi Town in Nishiiwai County, Senmaya Town in Higashiiwai County, Daito Town, Murone Village, and Kawasaki Village in Higashiiwai County. 岩手県南部,東磐井(ひがしいわい)郡の旧町。大部分丘陵地で,北上川の支流砂鉄川が流れ,大船渡(おおふなと)線が通じる。地質的に石灰岩質の土壌が多く,石灰石採掘,セメント工業が盛ん。東山(とうざん)和紙という手すき和紙を特産。猊鼻渓(げいびけい)がある。2005年9月西磐井郡花泉町,東磐井郡千厩町,大東町,室根村,川崎村と一関市へ編入。87.72km2。8417人(2003)。
