Isidorus

Isidorus

Spanish clergyman. Born into a distinguished family in Seville, he lost his parents at a young age. He was educated at the monastery of his brother Leander (?-599/601), a monk who had traveled to the East and became acquainted with the future Pope Gregory I in Constantinople. Isidore also succeeded his brother as bishop of Seville around 600, and worked hard to spread Catholicism in Spain under Visigothic rule, convert Jews, build schools and churches, and hold church councils. His wide-ranging knowledge was well known during his lifetime, and his books were frequently used throughout the Middle Ages as a treasure trove of various knowledge, especially his Etymologiae , which provided encyclopedic information on the various academic disciplines of the time. His Sententiarum Libri Tres (Collection of Propositions) is a manual of Christian doctrine and practice, his De Ecclesiasticis Officis is a valuable source on the liturgy and organization of the Spanish Church , his historia regibus Gothorum, Vandalorum et Suevorum (Historia regibus Gothorum, Vandalorum et Suevorum ) are indispensable sources of contemporary Spanish history.
