Atharvaveda

Japanese: アタルバ･ベーダ（英語表記）Atharvaveda

It is one of the Vedas, the sacred texts of ancient Indian Brahmanism, and is the fourth after the Rig-Veda, the Sama-Veda, and the Yajur-Veda. While the other three Vedas were created in conjunction with the rituals of orthodox Brahmanism, this Vedas is essentially a form of magic and has its origins in folk beliefs. This Vedas, which contains incantations to ward off evil and bring good fortune, was formerly called the Atharva-Angiras, indicating that it was created based on the incantations of the Atharvan tribe, who were in charge of bringing good fortune, and the incantations of the Aṅgiras, who were in charge of curses.

古代インドのバラモン教聖典《ベーダ》の一つで，《リグ･ベーダ》《サーマ･ベーダ》《ヤジュル･ベーダ》の3ベーダに次ぐ第4の地位を占める。他の3ベーダが正統バラモン教の祭式と結びついて成立したのに対し，このベーダは呪術を本質とし，民間の信仰に起源を発している。災いを払い，幸運を呼ぶ呪詞を収録したこのベーダは，古くは《アタルバ･アンギラス》と呼ばれ，招福をつかさどるアタルバンAtharvan族の呪術と，呪詛をつかさどるアンギラスAṅgiras族の呪術とをもとに成立したことを示している。
