Parnell was a member of I. Batt's Home Rule Party, where he quickly rose to leadership roles, becoming renowned for his filibustering tactics. In 1879 he became chairman of the Irish National Land League, and from 1879 to 1882 he led the Irish Land War, which sought the restoration of land ownership.
