A former town in Hienuki County in central Iwate Prefecture. The Tohoku Main Line runs through it. It is part of the grain belt in the middle reaches of the Kitakami River, and produces a lot of rice and sake. It is also a producer of Iwate apples. It is known as the birthplace of the Nanbu Toji (master brewers). In January 2006, it was incorporated into Hanamaki City along with Osako Town in Hienuki County and Towa Town in Waga County. 118.57 km2 . Population: 16,473 (2003). 岩手県中央部,稗貫(ひえぬき)郡の旧町。東北本線が通じる。北上川中流の穀倉地帯の一部をなし,米と酒の産が多い。岩手リンゴの産地でもある。南部杜氏(とうじ)の発祥地として知られる。2006年1月稗貫郡大迫町,和賀郡東和町と花巻市へ編入。118.57km2。1万6473人(2003)。
