A genre of ancient Greek theater. The Greek word komoidea means "song of a festival procession," and is thought to have originated from the festival processions praising Dionysus and the satirical songs that accompanied them. It is characterized by scathing satire on all aspects of life, including politics and customs. It is divided into three periods: the topical and political Old Comedy of the 5th century BC, represented by Aristophanes; the Middle Comedy up to around 330 BC (no works have survived); and the New Comedy from after that, represented by Menander, which was closer to a drama of manners. → Comedy / Greek Theater Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
