Share cropper

Japanese: シェア･クロッパー（英語表記）share cropper

A type of sharecropping that was formed after the American Civil War and the dissolution of the large plantation landowning system in the South. In a search for a mutual benefit between freed blacks who had no means of livelihood after emancipation and planters who had lost all of their labor force due to the emancipation of slaves, the sharecropping system was formed in which the landowners provided croppers with housing, arable land, seeds, farm tools, livestock, and other farming necessities, and in return the croppers would farm the land using their own and their family's labor and pay one-third to nearly two-thirds of the harvest to the landowners.

アメリカで南北戦争後，南部のプランテーション大土地所有制が解体されたあとに形成されていった一種の分益小作農。解放後なんらの生活手段を持たない解放黒人と，奴隷解放によってそれまでの労働力をまったく失ってしまったプランターの双方の利害の模索のなかから，地主側が住居や耕地，種子，農具，家畜などの農耕必需品をクロッパーに提供し，クロッパー側はその代償として，彼自身と家族の労働力で耕作を引き受け，収穫の1/3から2/3近くを地主に支払う分益小作制が形成されていった。
