Duccio di Buoninsegna

Italian painter active mainly in Siena between 1278 and 1318. Dates of birth and death unknown. He established the Sienese school of painting, influencing 14th-century Sienese painters such as S. Martini and the Lorenzetti brothers, as well as the Florentine school. His early masterpiece, the Rucellai Madonna (commissioned in 1285), is based on the Byzantine style, but while not as innovative as Giotto, he breathes new vitality and humanity into the Madonna and Child. His Maestà (Majestic Madonna) (1311) proves that he was one of the most skilled panel painters of his time, not only in terms of technique, but also in terms of narrative depiction.

1278‐1318年ころおもにシエナで活動したイタリアの画家。生没年不詳。S.マルティーニ，ロレンツェッティ兄弟ら14世紀のシエナ派の画家たちや，フィレンツェ派にも影響を及ぼしたシエナ派絵画の確立者。初期の大作《ルチェライの聖母》(1285委嘱)では，ビザンティン様式を基礎としながらも，ジョットほど革新的ではないが聖母子像に新しい生命力と人間性とを吹き込んでいる。また《マエスタ(荘厳の聖母)》(1311)は，板絵画家として，技術面だけではなく，物語描写において，彼が当時最も優れた画家の一人であることを立証している。
