Makoto Koizumi

Parasitologist. Born in Kyoto Prefecture. Graduated from the Department of Zoology at the Faculty of Science, Tokyo Imperial University in 1907 (Meiji 40). Entered the Institute for Infectious Diseases and studied parasitology under Miyajima Mikinosuke (1872-1944). Became an engineer at the Taiwan Central Research Institute in 1914 (Taisho 3), and after serving as director of the Health Department of the League of Nations, became a professor at Keio University School of Medicine in 1924.

He conducted extensive research into parasitology, particularly into roundworms, and his representative work is "Study of Ascaris" (1944). He also conducted research into malaria. At the same time, he worked hard to raise awareness about parasites, and served as chairman of the Parasite Prevention Association. He also had a deep knowledge of evolutionary science, and wrote works on the theory of evolution such as "Introduction to Evolutionary Science" (1933), as well as "Biological Pilgrimage" and "Hideyo Noguchi."

寄生虫学者。京都府の生まれ。1907年（明治40）東京帝国大学理科大学動物学科を卒業。伝染病研究所に入り、宮島幹之助（1872―1944）に師事して寄生虫学を専攻した。1914年（大正3）台湾中央研究所技師となり、国際連盟保健部理事を経て、1924年慶応義塾大学医学部教授となった。

　寄生虫学の研究、ことに回虫に関する広範な研究を行い、『蛔虫(かいちゅう)の研究』（1944）はその代表的著作である。またマラリアについての研究も進めた。そのかたわら寄生虫についての啓蒙(けいもう)運動に尽力、寄生虫予防協会理事長を務めた。進化学の造詣(ぞうけい)も深く、『進化学序講』（1933）など進化論に関する著作のほか、『生物学巡礼』『野口英世』などがある。
