Obai-in (Daitoku-ji Temple)

…After the fall of his master, he seems to have become a painter, and in the Tensho era (1573-92), with Sase Munemasa as his tutor, he was employed by Mori Terumoto, lord of Hiroshima Castle, with a fief of 200 koku. In 1588, there is a painting called “Plum Blossoms and Crows” (Kyoto National Museum) said to be a sliding door painting at Najima Castle of Kobayakawa Takakage, who was transferred to Chikuzen in 1588, and in the same year, there are wall paintings such as “Landscape Painting,” “Seven Sages in a Bamboo Grove,” and “Reeds and Geese” at the newly built subtemple of Daitokuji Temple (protected by the Kobayakawa and Mori families), so it can be said that he had established his own unique style of painting by around the age of 40 at the latest. His style of painting was a combination of Sesshu-style ink-wash landscape painting adapted to the large-scale Momoyama style. Although the relationship between his teacher and successor is unclear, he probably studied under artists and Gaseki of the Sesshu lineage in the Chugoku and Kitakyushu regions, and under the Kano school in Kyoto. …

From Daitokuji Temple

...Shinjuan has Landscape Painting and Bird and Flower Painting (both from the Muromachi period, Important Cultural Properties) said to have been painted by Soga Jasoku, while Jukoin has paintings on the walls of the abbot's chambers (National Treasures), including Bird and Flower Painting, believed to have been painted by Kano Eitoku. The main hall of Ryugenin temple (Important Cultural Property) to the south of the temple complex is the second oldest after the main hall of Daisenin temple, and the priest's quarters at Obaiin temple (1589, Important Cultural Property) are the oldest remains of a Zen subtemple priest's quarters with a known date, and are rare in that they have survived together with the abbot's chambers (1588, Important Cultural Property) from the same period. Located to the west of the temple complex, Koto-in Temple is home to a Landscape Painting (Southern Song period, national treasure), Ryuko-in Temple is home to a Yohen Tenmoku tea bowl (Southern Song period, national treasure), a Shoin study (early Edo period, national treasure) with a four-and-a-half-tatami-mat tea room called Mitsutan (Mitsuan seat) designed by Kobori Enshu, and Koho-an Temple is home to an Ido tea bowl (named Kizaemon,) which has been known since ancient times as a famous item.
