[Wind-resistant design of buildings]
The winds that are usually taken into consideration in the wind-resistant design of buildings are seasonal winds and typhoons. As Japan is in the path of typhoons, its design wind loads are among the highest in the world, along with earthquake loads. Wind acts as wind pressure on the exterior walls of buildings, including windows. The basic quantity of wind pressure is called velocity pressure, and if air density is ρ and wind speed is V , velocity pressure q is expressed as q = ρ V ² /2 (in engineering units). Using the air density at room temperature, q is approximately 0.06 V ² (units are kgf/m2, wind speed is m/s).

　建築物の耐風設計で通常考慮される風は季節風と台風である。日本では台風の通路にあたっているために設計用風荷重も地震荷重と並んで世界有数のものである。　風は窓面を含む建物の外壁面に風圧力として作用する。風圧力の基本量は速度圧と呼ばれるもので，空気密度をρとし，風速をVとすると速度圧qはq＝ρV²/2で表される(単位は工学単位)。常温における空気密度を用いれば，qは，およそ0.06V²(単位はkgf/m2，風速の単位はm/s)となる。
