Born: March 18, 1904 in Kobe Died: April 8, 1980. A scholar of Chinese literature in Kyoto. After graduating from the Faculty of Letters at Kyoto University in 1926, he studied in China from 1928 to 1931. He received his doctorate in 1947 for his work Genzaju Kenkyu (Research on Genzaju), and became a professor at Kyoto University in the same year. Under the guidance of Kano Naoki and Suzuki Torao, he inherited the orthodox tradition of Kyoto Chinese studies and established a new academic style known as Yoshikawa studies. He is a leading researcher in Chinese literature in recent years. Based on the results of Qing dynasty historical research, his basic research approach is to re-experience as accurately as possible the meaning of the Chinese classics as "words," and his subjects cover a wide range of fields from ancient times to the present. He also worked to popularize Chinese literature to the general public by supervising and writing Selected Chinese Poets and Selected Chinese Classics. His many works, including "Annotations on Du Fu's Poems," "Selections of New Tang Poems" (52, 54), and "Classics and Their Lives in the Chinese" (64), are all collected in the "Complete Works of Yoshikawa Kojiro" (vol. 24, 73-76). In 1984, he became a member of the Academy of Arts. In 1987, he became a professor emeritus at Kyoto University. In 1989, he was awarded the title of Person of Cultural Merit.
