Kosogabe clan

Japanese: 香宗我部氏 - こうそがべうじ

A land steward in the Middle Ages in Tosa Province. In 1193 (Kenkyu 4), Nakahara Akiie was appointed land steward of the Soga and Fukabuchi districts (Noichi Town) in Kami County, and moved down to the area. He handed the position over to his lord Ichijo Tadayori's son Akimichi, and took the name of the district, the Kosokabe clan, which continued until the end of the Sengoku period. During the upheaval of the Northern and Southern Courts, the family was on the side of the samurai from early on, and then played an active role as a vassal of the Hosokawa clan, the military governor. On the other hand, they branched out into the Nishiyama clan and grew into local lords whose influence extended to Mononobe-sho (Nangoku City) and Oosato-sho (Kami Town). However, after being defeated by the Aki clan in 1526 (Oei 6), the family's fortunes declined, and in 1556 (Koji 2), Chikahide killed Hidemichi, the head of the family, and the following year adopted Chikayasu, the third son of Chosokabe Kunichika, and became a member of the Chosokabe clan.

土佐国中世の地頭。1193年(建久4)中原秋家が香美郡宗我･深淵両郷(野市町)の地頭職に任ぜられ下向し，主家一条忠頼の子秋通に譲り，郡名を冠した香宗我部氏を名のったのに始まり，以後戦国末に至る。南北朝動乱に当たっては早くより武家方に属し，ついで守護細川氏の被官となり活躍するが，他方西山氏など庶流を分出，その勢力は物部庄(南国市)，大忍（おおさと）庄(香我美町)に及ぶ国人に成長した。しかし1526年(大永6)安芸氏に敗れてより家運衰え，56年(弘治2)親秀は家督秀通を殺し，翌年長宗我部国親の三男親泰を養子とし，長宗我部の一門となった。
