Chaulmoogra tree
An evergreen tall tree of the family Carpinaceae native to Indochina; its seeds are pressed to extract oleaginous oil. It reaches a height of 20m. The leaves are alternate, stalked, lanceolate, 10-30cm long, leathery and glossy, with no sawtooth edges. The flowers are dioecious, axillary, and borne in small clusters. There are 5 sepals, 5 petals, and 5-8 stamens or degenerate stamens, all separate. The ovary is locular, with 3-5 placentae and numerous ovules. The fruit is spherical, 8-12cm in diameter; the immature fruit is densely covered with brown soft hairs on the outside, but when ripe the skin becomes woody and rough.

インドシナ方面に自生するイイギリ科の常緑高木で,種子をしぼって大風子油をとる。高さ20mに達する。葉は互生し,有柄で披針形,長さ10~30cm,革質で光沢があり,ふちに鋸歯はない。花は雌雄異株で腋生(えきせい)し,数個ずつ短穂上につく。萼片は5個,花弁は5枚,おしべまたは退化したおしべは5~8個で離生。子房は1室で3~5個の胎座があり,多数の胚珠をつける。果実は球形で径8~12cm,未熟果は外面褐色の軟毛を密生するが,熟すと果皮は木質化して表面はざらつく。
