220-270 Roman Emperor. Reigned 268-270. He started as a private and became the cavalry commander under Emperor Gallienus, and after his assassination he became emperor. He had a good relationship with the Senate, but he put an end to the rebellions in Gaul, and in the East, he recognized the kingship of Zenobia of Palmyra, which led to her growing power. However, he advanced towards the Danube, defeated the Alamanni, and annihilated the Goths, turning them into mercenaries and colonies, earning him the title of "Gothicus (conqueror of the Goths)." He died of an illness in Sirmium. He was later revered as his ancestor by Constantine I. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
