Benguela - Benguela (English spelling)

Benguela - Benguela (English spelling)

A city in the western part of Angola, in southwestern Africa. It is a port city facing the Atlantic Ocean. It has a population of 40,996 (1970 census), 131,400 (2002 estimate). Since the Portuguese built a fort in 1587 and founded the town in 1617, it has been an important commercial center, especially for the slave trade. The Benguela Railway, completed in 1927, started at Lobito, just to the north, so its port functions have declined, but it remains the administrative and commercial center of the Benguela region today. The Benguela Railway was connected to the Katanga Railway in the Belgian Congo (now the Democratic Republic of the Congo) in 1931, and was also connected to Zambia in 1975, but train services have been suspended and some areas have been closed due to the civil war after independence.
