The founder of the ancient Chinese marquis state of Wu. Also written as Taibo. He was the eldest son of King Tai of Zhou, but when he learned that his youngest son, Ji Li's son Chang (King Wen), had been born with auspicious omens and was intelligent and virtuous, his father King Tai hoped that the position would one day be passed on to Chang, Taibo fled to Jiangnan with his younger brother Zhongyong, and in accordance with the customs of the area, cut his hair and tattooed himself, becoming the ruler of Jiangnan and establishing the state of Wu with Suzhou as its capital.
