Cannabikisou - Cannabikisou

Japanese: カナビキソウ - かなびきそう
Cannabikisou - Cannabikisou

A perennial plant of the Santalaceae family (APG classification: Santalaceae). It grows well in sunny lawns and is semi-parasitic on the roots of other species. The entire plant is glabrous and slightly powdery white. The stems grow in clusters of several 15-35 cm in height. The leaves are alternate, linear, 1-4 cm long and 1-3 mm wide, with pointed tips and somewhat fleshy. Flowers appear solitary in the leaf axils from April to June, with short pedicels that are fused with the lower part of the leaf and two bracteoles below the flower. The flowers are bisexual and small, with a pale green upper surface and white underside, and the perianth is fused to the ovary to form a tube with 4-5 lobes at the tip. There are 4-5 stamens, and the fruit is elliptical and spherical, 2-3 mm long, with a remaining perianth lobe at the tip, green, and has net-like raised veins on the surface. The name is written as "Tetsubiki-so", but the meaning is unknown. It is distributed in Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu, Okinawa, the Korean Peninsula, and China. The same genus , T. refractum CAMey., is slightly larger with a clear flower stalk, and is distributed in the northern temperate zone from Hokkaido to Siberia.
